On Friday, September 28, workers of state welfare centers will hold a one-day hunger strike from 8.00 to 16.00 at their workplaces. In the eight-hour hunger strike, about 1,000 people will take part.
This was announced by the head of the Latvian Trade Union of Employees of State Institutions, Municipalities, Enterprises and the Financial Sector Andrei Jirgensons.
As explained by Jirgensons, with this action the workers of the state centers of the social services announced a one-day hunger strike, as they wanted to ensure that the salary of low-paid workers, who now received only 430 euros (gross), was increased by at least 100 euros.
Earlier, the Ministry of Welfare requested an additional 6.4 million euros to increase wages to employees of the social care centers. This request was submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a priority measure of the budget of the next year. The Ministry of Finance asks to allocate for this purpose 6.4 million euros in 2019, 8.1 million euros in 2020, 16 million euros in 2021 and in subsequent years.
