The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development delivered an ultimatum to the Riga City Council demanding the abolition of new rules restricting the rights of deputies.

We remind you that the Riga City Council has adopted new amendments restricting the deputies not only in the duration of speeches which should not exceed more than 3 minutes but also in the number of questions asked, reducing their number to 3.

These amendments were named by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development as not permissible in a democratic society.

According to Minister Kaspar Gerhards, the Riga City Council simply limits the deputies the opportunity to participate fully in decision-making.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development reminds that according to the law on the status of a deputy of the city and regional Council, the deputy has the right to vote in all matters that are considered at the Riga City Council meeting, as well as the right to participate in debates and ask questions.

The length and number of questions asked can’t be limited, since the issues considered at the Council meeting may be different in scope and in substance.
