Today, September 21, the deputies of the Saeima gathered at a meeting to discuss the initiative proposed by President Vejonis on stopping the granting of non-citizen status to non-citizen children.

We would like to recall that President Vejonis proposed to allow children of non-citizens of Latvia to become Latvian citizens due to the fact of birth, if their parents do not want to grant them the citizenship of any other country. He said that the time had come for Latvia to cease the status of non-citizens. Vejonis believed that this step would help the development of the Latvian nation as a consolidated society based on shared values.

The National Union “Everything for Latvia” – “Tevzemei un Brivibai” / DNNL (HL-TB / DNNL) immediately stated that they would not support the president’s proposal to stop assigning the status of a non-citizen to children.

And already on Thursday, on September, 21st, the Saeima rejected the initiative of President Vejonis about the termination of granting the status of the aliens to the children born in Latvia, submitted for consideration. Previously, this idea had been rejected by the Cabinet of Ministers – in many respects because of the principally negative position of the National Association.

As Vejonis emphasized, “Latvia has been an independent country for 26 years, and we still are afraid of children”.
