The proposal advanced by the “Unity” suggesting the possibility to override the powers of the president of the bank of Latvia in case his or his deputy or a member of the board is suspected or accused of a criminal precedent was rejected by the Saeima Budget and Finance Commission.
In response, the commission put forward a proposal that the President of the Bank of Latvia may hold office for no more than two consecutive terms.
At the moment, the law provides the possibility of dismissal of the President of the bank of Latvia only on his personal application, for serious violations in the understanding of the statute of the European Central Bank or after the conviction has come into force.
As previously reported, Ilmars Rimsevics was accused of corruption, but refused to leave office explaining the situation by political pressure.
