Andris Piebalgs, the leader of the ruling political party “Unity”, refused to run for office in the upcoming elections to the party’s leadership.

According to Piebalgs, the decision was made by him independently, proceeding from the fact that inside the party there was internal tension, and also there was an urgent need to restore the confidence of the electorate.

He also added that a party congress would take place in the near future, in September. According to Andris Piebalgs, members and supporters of the “Unity” party also expected radical changes in the party, which meant that a new party leadership was needed.

The politician admitted that his proposal did not foresee radical changes, and it would be rather a consolidation plan.

We would like to remind that Piebalgs was a member of “Unity” since 2014. In June 4, 2016, he replaced the scandalous leader of the party Solvita Aboltina.
