The center of state language is going to apply to the court with a demand to annul the mandate of Balvi Duma deputy Ivan Baranov, since they did not manage to contact him and check his knowledge of the state language.

“We wrote letters and various proposals on a regular basis, how we could meet: in the Duma, in the office of Aluksnensky inspector of the center, in the premises, we indicated different times, but no cooperation came about,” said the head of the regional department, Sarmite Pavulena.

The decision that Baranov should be stripped of his mandate for ignorance of state language was adopted in November 2015 by the Balvi District Court. The deputy filed an appeal, but the district court upheld the trial court, finding that the claim of the State Language Center was perfectly justified. The District Court found the fact of ignorance and non-use of the Latvian language by Baranov in the amount necessary for the performance of his official duties.
