Because of the pits on certain streets, speed limits have already been introduced by the authorities. The head of the government, Krisjanis Karins, does not yet see a quick solution to the problems, the Riga City Council advises to move more carefully, and insurance companies complain about the increased number of claims for compensation.

From February 13, a speed limit will be introduced on two streets in Riga – Jaunciema Gatve and Viestura Avenue – in both directions of movement up to 50 km / h, and road signs “Desired speed – 30 km / h” and “Uneven road” will be installed. Also the speed will be limited to 30 km / h at the Zemitanu bridge in Riga.

As the Department of Communications of the Riga City Council explained, restrictions were imposed because of the fact that due to weather conditions there are dangerous pits on the roads. The department encourages drivers to be attentive and comply with new restrictions.

They will operate until the enterprises servicing the roads fill up the pits. These works can be carried out when the air temperature is at least from +5 to +10 degrees.

The deplorable state of the roads in Riga is one of the arguments that the opposition cited, demanding the removal of the mayor of the capital, Nil Ushakov. He defended his post.

The Prime Minister, Krisjanis Karins, does not yet see opportunities for the rapid and effective participation of the state in solving the problem of the poor condition of Riga’s streets.

The number of pits on the roads is growing every day, insurance companies are already talking about the tragedy of the situation. They get a lot of claims due to damage of cars on the roads. Compared to last year, the number of applications has quadrupled.
