After a high level of radiation was detected in the ash that was formed after the burning of chips in the summer, Rigas siltums will check the level of radiation in the shipment of chips, said the chairman of the enterprise Vyacheslav Stepanenko.

According to him, the media incorrectly reported that the radiation was found in chips – it was in the ash that was formed as a result of its combustion. “On June 14, for the first time in the history of the company in Getlini, where we hand over the ashes, the radiation counter worked.” The work of all boiler-houses was immediately stopped, the State Environmental Service (SES) was called, which stated that the level of radiation in the ashes exceeds the norm, “- said Stepanenko.

In this case, the level of radiation in the chips was normal.

The SES said that earlier radiation limits for wood chips in Latvia were not established, as the Radiation Safety Center did not face such a problem. “It is very important to understand whether this was a separate case or whether special norms should be developed, as Lithuania did,” the center said.

In order that the situation does not recur, Rīgas siltums will begin to check the level of radiation in the loads of wood chips, amending the contracts, stipulating an allowable level of radiation – 30 becquerels per kilogram. The goods will be checked in a selective manner.
