In connection with the rapid reproduction of blue-green algae, the Riga Municipality calls on the population to temporarily refrain from bathing in the Gulf of Riga on the beach in Vecaki.

Reacting to the information of the responsible services, the self-government in the evening of July 10 will put information signs about the restriction of bathing in places for swimming.

In the near future, extraordinary water analyzes will be conducted in the Gulf of Riga near Vecaki. After receiving the results, the public will be informed about the level of pollution and the possibility of swimming.

The Riga City Council notes that the last time measurements of water quality on the beach in Vecaki were carried out last week. Then the water quality was normal.

Blue-green algae, while dying off, can excrete toxins in the water, which can cause various allergic skin reactions and inflammation of the mucous membrane. Poisoning people with blue-green algae occurs very rarely. If a person touches in water with blue-green algae, they should immediately wash themselves in clean water and can also use activated charcoal. In case of severe poisoning, people should seek medical help.

In addition, pets should not be allowed to drink water, in which blue-green algae multiply – animals can poison themselves with toxins and even die.

“Colored waters” during the reproduction of algae are observed in Latvian rivers and lakes, as well as in the Gulf of Riga every year. As a rule, this process is harmless.

This year on the Vetsaki beach the Blue Flag is installed for the first time – it’s a sign that everything sign is clean.
