The state police plans to install on the roads new devices to monitor traffic safety.

According to the head of the State Police Bureau for Supervision and Coordination of Traffic, Vineta Mistra, by early April of this year, radars will appear on the Tinuzi-Koknese highway to record the average speed of vehicles.

Another 100 photoradars will appear on the roads of Latvia, but half of them will be “dummies”.

In addition, the State Police plans to purchase devices for recording non-compliance with prohibitive signals of traffic lights. According to Mistra, if the government allocates money in the near future, the purchase will be made quickly.

The devices will be connected to the already installed stationary photoradar in Bergi on street Brivibas gatve and in Pinki on the 37th km of the Salaspils-Babite ring road in both directions.

A contract has been concluded for the purchase of one specially equipped vehicle, with the help of which the police will control whether the driver is using a mobile phone while driving. Its delivery is planned in late February – early March.

Stationary photoradars, which began to be installed on the roads of Latvia in 2015, have proven their effectiveness.

On the roads of Latvia the speed of the cars will start to be measured in a new way.

Now on the roads of Latvia there are one hundred stationary radars and 12 mobile ones.

According to the State Police, in 2018, 149 people died on the roads of Latvia, which is 10% more than a year earlier. As a result of road accidents from January to November 2018 were 4 266 people were injured.

In the first three quarters of 2018, stationary and mobile photoradars detected 173,000 speeding violations on Latvian roads, the amount of fines for which amounted to about 6.5 million euros.
