In case of the beginning of the crisis or military conflict, Latvian residents must independently defend themselves, according to the draft of the report of the national defense ministry published on the website of the government of the country.

The document notes that the state is not able to ensure the safety of all citizens in the event of a conflict, so residents must themselves be responsible for themselves and their relatives. And although the government, according to the authors of the report, should offer some “models of self-organization,” the ability to organize themselves will remain the main task of Latvian citizens”.

At the same time, the military department emphasizes that the level of threat against Latvia today is such that “defense of the state only by military means is no longer possible,” therefore, it is necessary to improve the system of state protection, which is based on the readiness of society and the state to overcome the crisis, relying on “mutual trust and partnership of residents”.

Earlier, Defense Minister Raimond Bergmanis said that Latvia might continue to increase defense expenditure which already amounts to 2% of GDP. At the same time, the republic is on the third place in the EU in terms of population reduction, so the further increase in the budget for defense, according to experts, is nonsense.
