Latvia has decided to ask for international assistance in extinguishing a fire in the Talsi region. Such a statement was made by Minister of Agriculture Janis Duklavs and Interior Minister Richard Kozlovskis on July 23. It is noted that the assistance will be requested from just 28 EU countries. The main emphasis in the request for assistance will be made on the provision of assistance from the air.

According to the EU Copernicus program, by the Thursday morning the plot of more than 700 hectares has burnt out in the Valdaga area. Actually, officials reported 400 hectares of burned-out area.

According to the chairman of the Ventspils Regional Council Aivars Mucenieks, dams are being built to limit the fire, ditches are being dug. Localization of the fire is carried out by the employees of the State Social Insurance Service and Latvijas Valsts meži (Latvian State Forests) and guardsmen, land owners help with water and the local peasants with their powerful tractors. The fire is also extinguished by two helicopters NVS Mi-17 and a helicopter of the Lithuanian army.
