From next year, owners of electronic ID-cards will be able to put an electronic signature for free.

Latvians are increasingly using various online services. Fresh polls show that Latvia is among the top five EU countries in terms of the share of public services provided on the Internet.

Six hundred Latvian state and municipal institutions offer online services, and over the year the number of people who used them increased by one hundred thousand and reached almost a million.

Such data was provided by the Ministry of Environment and Regional Development, which oversees this area.

The Latvian Information and Technology Association indicates that more attention should be paid not to the number of services, but to what quality they are and how convenient for users.

A survey conducted in the framework of the “My Latvia.lv” campaign showed that not only older people face difficulties in using electronic services, but most of the youth do not understand their essence.

The ministry will continue informational events next year to train schoolchildren and librarians throughout Latvia.

Starting next year, the use of electronic signatures for owners of electronic ID-cards should be free, which will simplify the system of reporting and payments, will support the use of (such services), and it will be more convenient for people, ” said Edmunds Belskis, Secretary of State for Technology.

By now more than 1,300 librarians, almost five hundred schoolchildren and more than sixty state and municipal employees have been trained.
