The state of emergency in the agricultural sector was announced in 27 municipalities in the eastern Latvian region of Latgale, and partly in the northern regions of Vidzeme and southern parts of Kurzeme, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis said after the meeting of the Council on Crisis Management today.

Last week many areas in the province of Latgale were flooded after heavy rains, which caused serious damage to crops, several regional and local roads and buildings.

The Crisis Management Council decided to establish a coordinating council that will coordinate all issues with affected local authorities.

“Financial losses caused to the flood-affected areas are still assessed, but compensation will be paid out of the budgetary reserve funds,” said Kuchinskis.

According to the calculations of the Minister of the Environment and Regional Development Kaspars Gerhards, the total damage to the infrastructure is estimated in the amount of 1,170,000 euros. Compensations to the infrastructure will be provided by the end of September.
